Rowland Adult and Community Education offers a wide variety of courses for adult learners. These include English as a Second Language, High School Diploma and Equivalency, Parent Education, community interest classes, and much more. We have been serving the Rowland Heights community since 1971. Our purpose is to provide adults the opportunity to be informed, productive, and engaged community members through quality and meaningful educational programs. welcome to the 2022 open house for Roland. and Community Education even though we're not gathering in person this year we have put together a video tour of our school that we think will provide a glimpse of what we do it right my name is Gail Lee I am the sea in principle and I will be your guide this morning first let me introduce the superintendent of Rowland Unified School District dr. Julie Mitchell on the board of education Donna Freedman president Venegas vice president David Malkin flirt Agnus Dei Gonzalez number and carry 10 number who are all joining us virtually it's my pleasure to welcome all of you to the Rowland adult video dictation open house and adult education as you all know the past two years have been a challenge and covid is impacted our adult Learners as well the entire adults will move to 100% virtual learning in March 2020 and our adult students are thrilled to now have the choice b b in person who only need a 5 school district adult education staff has been nothing short of marvelous through this entire process like our School Aids t k through 12 staff the adult education staff needed to reinvent what adult learning would look like and It's All Digital for through hard work and dedication the learning continued without interruption our schools has played a vital role in the community as a place of stability and comfort we are excited for you to see some of our schools highlights from our students and staff thank you again for joining us for our race the belt education open house and is celebrating our amazing staff and incredible students just relieved I turn it back over to you thank you dr. Mitchell during the early days of the covid-19 stomach our need for staying connected to establish Community groups was magnified the staff at race worked hard to maintain connection with our students in an online environment after 18 months of fully online experience we welcome students back to the classroom in August please listen to office clerk Kenya Lopez and custodian John Vance Describe the impact the adult education commune has had on themselves and on our students I think we all take for granted how nice it is to just have someone say hello to you and ask how you're doing during the pandemic will really able to do that when we're together it's easier for us to be able to interact with each other and make a difference and I reach others lives it was just a smile hello or just now getting to collaborate with each other that's the best way to get you know the school run a lot of our students have not had that one-on-one kind of attention and for many of them you know they look forward to being in school and getting to interact with us and having these conversations with brighter even if it's just a hello or how you're doing or just you know it's a compliment you're doing a really good job on your classes and everything when we're together it's easier for us to be able to interact with each other and make a difference in reach other side it's important for all of us back together again just makes a difference when you can see someone looking motivated or happy or something that what they're accomplishing it bleeds over into you to make you feel like you got something accomplished that day and honestly as humans we are a group quality and so we really need to be around each other to me I happy our adult secondary education program offers adults the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and to study for a high school equivalency exam such as d e d or I set I built secondary ed teacher Norma Chavez and councillor Joe miraglia will highlight how adult secondary yet serves our commute my name is Norma Chavez and I'm an adult secondary education teacher innocent me and asked me why they would need a diploma I would explain that it opens up opportunities for them while students drop out of school they just basically aged out so they turn 18 they had to do they had to leave school so worthy alternative to that a lot of students they are good ones or realize that they need a high school education to get a a job the older students realize they need an education to get a better stop loving trade schools require a high school diploma or high school equivalency we have students who want to get their diploma to join the military and then say well it might be better version of myself my name is Stephanie Garcia and I will be your school counselor we offer a variety of counseling services such as academic planning where we help me choose the classes to meet you call career and College Planning where we help you explore possible careers or if you would like to continue your education help you select a major and with that we also help you transition on to college or trade I going over different programs different schools and we help you with the application process lastly if you are looking to go straight into the workforce we help you with resume building interview skills and also job search my name is Joseph Sarabia counselor at role in adults will we have students who need the adult school because when they were in their traditional K-12 they were having problems with attended they were having problems with concentration they had a variety of issues and for whatever reason they dropped out there is no judgment about students who come to the Rowland adult school are there for a variety of reasons I'm confident that they're going to receive a quality education and they're going to be happy with the results I still have a passion for what I do and it really is enjoyable to see them at our graduation ceremony and to see their smiling faces and to look at their families who are cheering and clapping and it really makes you fill out at all worthwhile all the teachers that we had raised a very passionate and that makes us better educator so we can serve then that's what we're here for to help members of the community to fulfill their their desires in their dreams in addition to academic courses are parent education classes allow young parents to interact with others through child and parent participation in a preschool environment parents and children learn together in group activities designed to promote social and emotional growth in children and peer support for parents are parent education coordinator Colleen Bridgewater and two of her students can describe the classes my name is Colleen Bridge water I'm a parent education teacher for Roland adult and Community Education has asked me what about this is our parent participation class was there actually interacting with your child they're doing Circle time with their child they're playing outside with their time the learning to be better parents moms get to meet other moms and you know you're not alone in this here at the class I'm learning how to be a better parent my first impression of the parent education class here at roll I was just floored it feels very warm very inviting it feels like they actually care about the kids had a share at parent education is very fulfilling for both myself and my son and I believe it is going to prepare him for kindergarten I feel that we are both learning I'm learning as a parent how to teach my kids and my son is also learning at the same time my child loves it there's a lot of opportunity and support that I've gotten here at the class transition to my first child away to school without me when spent three years together and now it's time to send him off I wanted to be there with him so being able to come here with him made me feel very comfortable I also feel like it made the transition for him a little bit more comfortable. I think the main reason we chose this class it's he could transition more easily into kindergarten the class was just as much for me the parent as it was for the child networking and communicating with other parents in the class with help me to develop more patience I also would discover solutions that other parents were using to give their children's skills in behavior and social skills not only that it's going to teach parents the skills that they need to make their all the best that they can be everything with his would cry a lot get upset over time he learned to share to get along to take turns and if you're just staying at home when you're really not going to get that social interaction being in this kind of environment being feeling that safety with your mom and really does help them to grow to get ready for preschool and kindergarten I would highly recommend this process especially for the value received because it be with your child we're at preschool you don't you drop them off and you go it's a much more intimate experience our course offerings also include a wide variety of personal interest classes such as sewing piano classes digital photography we also have classes that focus on health and well-being such as dance and fitness classes along with first aid and CPR certification courses race also partners with ed2go to provide a full spectrum of online classes that provide training for career advancement in programs like medical billing and coding bookkeeping human resources and many more the largest program at race English as a second language and citizenship preparation Department we typically serve more than 1,300 students in ESL and citizenship classes here is one of our DSL instructors discussing the impact learning which can have on a student I believe that taking an ESL class is a great idea because it will open doors for you but in many cases you didn't even know existed I myself lived in Mexico for 3 years I learn Spanish quite well I had experiences down there that I never would have had had I not known in Spanish same thing happens here learn English doors will open for work opportunities communication with family members and friends loved ones that's about being able to read being able to enjoy television radio music I mean there's an endless list of reasons why it makes sense to learn English if if you're living here in the US the English as a second language program really covers a wide variety of needs of our students we have a lot of students who speak Chinese or Korean we have students who speak Spanish or Portuguese or Arabic so no matter what your native language is the only language speak in the classroom is English and everybody's learning at the same Pace but doesn't matter what level you are at in English when you come in we can meet you where you are and help you advance to the next level of English have what we call Open Enrollment which means you can come and enroll in a class at any time throughout the year we have classes at meet mornings afternoons evenings we encourage you to attend daily often as you can because the more you attend the quicker you're able to learn and gain proficiency all of our ASL classes are free of charge there are no residency requirements for attending and yes I'll clasp anyone can come there no barriers in that sense to being able to attend DSL plasse's students who come to our class have a sense of community in the classroom they connect with other students at connect with their teacher so there are many examples of students who have come here with limited English and have achieved great things by learning English for a teacher's is not just a job it's a calling finally I want to introduce you to our own adult program social interaction and Community involvement become especially important to us as we age many people found it difficult to maintain those connections during the pandemic a trace we help feel that social by maintaining our older adults class on Zoom this allowed our students not only to continue their social connection but also the opportunity to build their digital capabilities but during the pandemic we weren't doing that we were doing Zoom but I'm not a zoom person I prefer to come here to Rowland Heights and do it you know with the instructor that's what I love about the guy I came in to learn knitting and crocheting and I'm having a great time I did a chair I did a little pumpkin a little cat a little ghost I thoroughly enjoy it I throw and I do care people to all the time she joined the class that my name is Janet Hernandez I am a teacher at Rowland adult and Community Education the students I work with are seniors ranging from 75 5 to 95 years old I teach them grammar I teach them American idioms a lot of American culture they help each other out with some of my students and goal is to become an American citizen so this is one of those Avenues where they feel they can get the English that they need to complete the application just so that they can build their English skills and we help them with that thank you for taking the time to visit our school I hope this has given you a brief look at some of the ways we serve the community of Rowland Heights we look forward to hosting a live event next spring our world has changed significantly since our school first opened its doors in 1971 but with each change we have a Captain to identify and address the needs of our community and we continue to do so by offering a combination of online and in-person learning our goal is to provide adults the opportunity to be in form productive and engaged community members we invite you to enroll in one of our courses see you in a class soon
